You should never just stick to a text book to teach. Students should utilize all forms of literature for learning purposes, such as magazines or comics. If you've got a toddler or new baby, it may be difficult to focus on your older child's lessons. What you must do is to give each child a specific block of time. Find things that are good for all the kids. Take advantage of every opportunity to engage both children without interfering with their development and bonding.

Do not forget to teach 'elective' subjects like art. Have your kids do an art project about each thing you learn about. From a reenactment to writing a song, the sky is the limit! When a child is fully immersed in something interesting, it is much easier to learn and retain new information -- even if it's not their strongest subject.

It is important for young children to get some alone time during the day. Set aside an area with learning toys and crafts with which they can play. Your students can help teach them by reading to them or counting with them, too. This way, all the kids will learn something, and the older ones will feel more grown-up and responsible.

Do your research so you are clear about what the homeschooling laws are in your area. Visit the HSLDA website to find out the laws that apply to you. Join an organization of homeschoolers to avoid any problems with CPS or Dept. of Education. Yes, you may need to pay membership fees, but you will have access to information that will help you homeschool correctly.

Write down the advantages and disadvantages of homeschooling and public school, and compare them. If you felt your children were not receiving everything they needed at public school, this comparison can assist you in covering those missing items. The list shows you what to emphasize and what to neglect in terms of learning. Keep it somewhere secure and regularly refer to it.
