Clinton Dorny, the Executive Director at Discovery Ranch, Utah, accompanied by Thomas Holmes, Family Service Planner and Media Supervisor were interviewed on Parent Choices for Struggling Teens on L.A. Talk Radio. Discovery Ranch is a therapeutic boarding school for boys and girls. The two guests discussed the topic of the teenager brain in the digital world with L.A. Radio Talk show host Lon Woodbury. The essential question was: "It's not going to go away, so what should we do about it?"
How The Teenager Brain In the Digital World Is A Social Problem
The interview began with a dramatic story about a teenager who was #3 in the World of Warcraft game. He spent 17 hours in front of the computer. He was pale, emaciated, and furious when he showed up at Discovery Ranch. During his first few days, he often verbally lashed out at everyone around him.
The visitors discussed exactly how Discovery Ranch concentrated on prying adolescents away from technology. Studies revealed that teens invested approximately 81/2 hours using electronic technology, and if you included watching TV, then about 11 hours. In one study in Britain, 1000 university student from 12 different universities were unable to refrain from using a mobile phone or computer system within a 24 hour interval. They experienced feelings of misery, stress, anxiety, irritation and sense of vulnerability.
Much of this addiction to technology is because it helps teens withdraw from life issues and their own unresolved emotional concerns. Discovery Ranch weans adolescents off overdependence on technology by replace it with other activities like equine therapy, canoeing, rappelling, and hiking.
When adolescents first get to Discovery Ranch, they are told that they will not have any opportunities to use technology. This news sends them into a panic, and they act our their frustration and despair either aggressively or passively.
Extreme media dependency is known as "a process addiction." Withdrawal from electronic tools produces feelings that are similar to withdrawal from alcohol or drugs. Digital addiction lead to reduced communication abilities, particularly in social settings. Equine or horse therapy aids them learn non-verbal body language. They are literal thinkers, very black and white, very linear.
Equine therapy helps to retrain the digital brain because it aids teenagers develop the ability to cope, create a positive self-image, and leave their digital comfort zones. Likewise team building activities help them learn ways to agree others.
Some things parents can do to limit technology addiction is to have no laptops and no Smartphone's. Computers should be password-protected and placed in public areas like the living room.
