Here are the things you can do to lower your risk and, therefore, your car insurance:

1. Most car insurance companies give a discount to people who drive less than a specific number of miles every year because of the assumption that they are less likely to have an accident; the limit varies according to the insurer. You should try to stay within this limit by using public transportation or carpooling whenever possible.

2. Take only as much insurance as you need. For instance, if you already have medical insurance then you do not need to take a car insurance policy that will pay your medical bills. Limit your policy to covering the cost of repairing a vehicle involved in a collision and also medical costs of other people involved in the accident caused by you.

3. Park in your garage if you have one. Like item 3, this will discourage auto thieves and will lower the risk of freak incidents like a downed tree, hail damage, etc. Grouping your insurance policies together is a great way to save money in the long-term. If you combine your auto, health and home insurance, you should be able to save thousands of dollars over the life of your policy. Just make sure you're choosing a great company to handle your policy.

4. Install anti-theft equipment on your car. Make the would-be thief consider an easier car to burgle or vandalize than yours. Insurance is the best way to financially protect yourself. But with so many insurance types and an overload of information, it can be hard to know where to start.

5. If you use your car in your profession, see if the company will issue a company car or change your profession. The more you are on the road, the higher your risk will be that you will be involved in an incident. If you just commute, know your commute miles and report them accurately to your insurance company.

By using all or any of those ideas, you'll decrease your vehicle insurance and have all of the coverage you'll need.
