CFA fire trucks, instead of ambulances, could soon be first on the scene in medical emergencies in Casey to ensure patients are treated more promptly.
Career CFA officers at Hallam and Cranbourne are getting intensive medical response training so they can help paramedics in serious cases.
CFA southern metropolitan region operations manager Trevor Owen said 120 firefighters would finish their 80 hours of training this week and would start responding from July 24.
“It’s a big change for us,” Mr Owen said.
“You’ll not just see an ambulance but a fire truck as well.”
CFA officers are learning how to defibrillate people whose hearts have stopped and to treat others who have asthma, are drug or alcohol-affected, not breathing, and children with constricted airways.
Mr Owen said firefighters would help keep patients alive until paramedics arrived.
“Our response times are eight minutes to get on scene; ambulances can respond in 12 to 16 minutes.”
