Beauty pageants are becoming more and more popular all across the globe, especially those done for children under the age of 18. In the contests, participants are scored by judges based on their talents and beauty. The contests might be considered natural or glitz. When it comes to a glitz pageant, contestants are encouraged to wear makeup, intricate hairstyles, elaborate costumes and other things that are believed to enhance their overall appearance.

The idea behind competitions has been around in America since the 1930s. A few decades later, in 1960s, the Little Miss America contest was started in New Jersey. This competition was initially set up for teenagers, age 13 to 17 years. It was not until 1964 when a major increase pushed participants to 35,000 and prompted the addition of age divisions.

These types of contests have become more popular in recent times. This industry is quite lucrative, bringing in billions of dollars in revenue every year. The parents of contestants are known to spend a lot of money on lessons, clothing and other similar services in order to increase their chances of winning.

The majority of these competitions include female contestants. With that said, an increasing amount of boys are becoming involved too. Age divisions are set up for every couple years and range from contestants age zero all the way up to 18 years of age. These divisions might also be known under special names, including Little Miss, Petite Miss and Baby Miss.

Competitions usually last for approximately two hours, but the time will vary based on the contest. There are varying rules related to stage time and other things. For some pageants, contestants are not allowed to be on stage for more than two minutes, even during their talent act. Participants are encouraged to learn about all the regulations and rules specific to the contest they are entered in so that they do not get disqualified or lose points for breaking rules. Parents of young children and babies are usually allowed to go on stage with their child.

In glitz pageants, almost anything goes. These include participants who have routines that are very elaborate. Usually the routines include sassy moves and facial expressions. Fake teeth, fake nails, flawless makeup, elaborate hairstyles and spray tans are just some of the things seen in these big competitions. This is the complete opposite of what is typical in natural pageants.

Most natural contests emphasize the natural beauty of contestants. For this reason, there are strict rules on use of makeup, clothing and hair extensions. Usually makeup is not allowed, with the exception of lip-gloss that is non-shiny or small amounts of mascara. While glitz is considered a type of pro-am modeling, natural contests are more on track with the Miss America-style competitions.

Rules, criteria and guidelines employed for this kind of pageantry will vary. A glitz pageant is known for its glamorous and showy nature. Those who participate in these styles usually go all out when it comes to hair, makeup, nails, tans, routines and costumes. The titles and prizes that are awarded during these competitions will also vary. Participants should be fully aware of the regulations and rules.
