Pittsburgh Ballet Theater began with its work back in 1969. Its founders were Mr. Nicholas Petrov, the first artistic director of this ensemble, and Mrs. Loti Falk, the first chairman of the board, or a Board chair. Only one year after, they started their first subscription season. For the next few years, Mr. Petrov was leading them, till he resigned in 1976.

Pittsburgh Ballet Theater soon became very popular, and surely the most exciting dancing ensemble in USA. They nurture exceptional dancing style and excellence, and they do everything with such incredible passion that their audience continue to grow, as well as their subscriber base. When they first started with The Nutcracker, it was obvious they will come a long way.

PBT School was organized in 1979. At the time, artistic director was Mr. Patrick Franz, and the appointed chairman of the board was Mr. Anthony Bryan. A year after that, their Intensive Summer Program was first launched, and instantly became popular and appreciated.

When Mrs. Patricia Wilde took thing in her hands in 1982, things started to get even better. As a former principal dancer, Mrs. Wilde improved their recognizable technique and led them to another level of excellence. Her clear and precise approach made her widely appreciated and respected among dancers and their audience. She set 32 new works during her tenure.

Pittsburgh Ballet Theater is proud to present at least fifty performances every single year. They perform at home, but also take different tours. They have founded several dancing schools, and presented the Schenley program for High school students. Their primary goal is to educate and teach. Numerous excellent dancers finished their appreciated programs, and now perform as lead dancers all over the state.

In 2012, Pittsburgh Ballet Theater presented the premiere of A Streetcar Named desire, by John Neumeir. This professional company is community based. They perform both modern and traditional pieces through their innovative approach, elegant style and exquisite technique that is highly appreciated.

The Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky is probably the most appreciated piece of all times. Beauty, elegance and drama, all in one. Musically perfect, emotionally deep and exciting dancing performance and extraordinary choreography will be seen in February next year. The perfect combination of music and dance is simply irresistible, and every real admirer will make sure not to miss it.

PBT organizes different interesting events. This season you can attend an evening of beer and dance, or maybe take a look at exciting works presented by famous choreographer Twyla Tharp. This unusual and exciting event will certainly fulfill your expectations and charm you. Nine Sinatra songs are also something you wouldn't want to miss.

The Nutcracker is something really special. This really is the most exciting season production, with more than 150 performers and endless number of fabulous costumes. Amazing choreography and always expected dancing excellence make it the most expecting event of this season, both for professional dancers and for their loyal audience. The opening of a season takes place in December.

The Nutcracker is the biggest event this season, but you can also enjoy in very popular Don Quixote or numerous other events. This season, Pittsburgh Ballet Theater is presenting one of the most loved performances of all times, the famous Swan Lake. This simply beautiful piece written by Tchaikovsky is absolutely amazing. The theater will tour locally, nationally and internationally, as always.
