Concepts for Handling the Confusing Problem of Parenting Young Adults

The guest went over just how parents are affected by their grownup child's problems with developing and functioning in society as independent adults. She also offered advice for parents who are having a hard time with the problems arising from their child's struggle with maturing into responsible adulthood.

Why are young people feeling overwhelmed? It's because they don't understand the best ways to create competency and self-confidence in the world. Instead, they are stuck in worry and anxiety, which might commonly be misinterpreted as an absence of inspiration by bewildered parents. When parents step in to aid their child, they actually deprive them of a chance to develop on their own.

Often economic uncertainty makes it difficult for young adults to strike out on their own. In many cases, the cost of living exceeds what can be earned from a regular job. Additionally, children may have fallen into bad habits like substance abuse or gaming addiction. Lon pointed out, for example, how video games might be a problem, as they provide a perfect emotional substitute for a wide range of real life experiences. Rohini acknowledged this issue and talked about how needs fulfilled by video games have to be fulfilled in healthier ways that can help provide basic needs like food and shelter.

Failure to launch is a real social issue and it's important for parents to look into how they can set up healthy independence in their adult children. The confusing problem of parenting young adults can be resolved by learning how to communicate clearly and asking for help from relatives and professionals when necessary.
