In order to get an Overhead Crane Operator Certification, an individual must pass stringent test and accept great responsibilities. The safety of those around the crane operation area is very important including that of the operator himself and the items being hoisted. One should however be flexible to adjust to each hoisting machine operations manual which differ from manufacturer to manufacturer.
One must at least pass the requirements physically so as to be allowed to train in this operation. A good vision is required similar to that for acquiring a driving license. The ability to use effectively all four limbs is another factor. The person should be tall enough to see what is going on in the operations area comfortably. Good coordination between eyes, limbs and being devoid of any convulsive disorder is a requirement for this job. One must be able to understand basic signals like hands and warnings.

The operating purpose of every control has to be learnt and their limit of operation understood well. The individual must know how to perform daily checks on this hoisting machine before starting work. He should well understand the sequences of hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical start-up. The start up and shutdown procedures must be properly understood including emergency shutdown procedures. The signals for hand, radio and telephone must be learnt so as to be effective in communication while operating this hoisting machine.
One must be aware of personal protective equipment to use when operating a crane. Since it lifts loads for above 5 feet, it requires head protection. An approved harness and lanyard must be worn or any fall arresting appliance should be worn as per the safety standards.
Before every shift starts, the hoisting machine operator must go through a visual test and any defect has to be immediately reported to the supervisor. One has to check the hoisting limits on the drum, if less than 3 wraps then this must be reported for further action. In case of a power failure one must put all controllers in the off position.
An operator must always land any attached load before leaving the crane unattended even for a short time. This also applies to power; all controllers must be in the off position. And before switching the main switch off, l controllers have to be in the off position so as to avoid any unwanted movements when it is switched on.
Only respond to signals from the controlling employee. The only time to respond to other employees is when they give the emergency stop signal which may save a life.
