The problems with public education system have led to a crisis that seems to divide society down the middle. Despite successive administrations trying to address them, they continue to rear their ugly head. There appears to be two systems of education depending where the school is located. Such disparities have resulted in indirect discrimination.

Schools located in wealthier districts appear to have a different system compared to those in poor areas. Little gains have been made in addressing the issue. The picture coming out of the current situation is gloomy especially when one considers other nations that are way ahead in their reforms. The trouble is that this might affect the competitiveness of students graduating from the current system at a global level. The nation will become less competitive even in development.

Schools located in poor suburbs are worst hit by the crisis that has locked learning. The rate of dropout before high school graduation is alarming. The diplomas awarded to those graduating do not meet the standards stipulated. The academic confidence of basic subjects is not certified. This mean that the grandaunts are not prepared for either higher education or advanced technical training. It means that they can not perform in the job market.

Resources play a major role in uplifting the quality of graduates from an institution. Schools located in poorer areas do not have as much resources as their counterparts in wealthy areas. There is a clear difference in the facilities available for learning. Motivation, learning and results will be affected in this regard. The trajectory graduates begin upon completion differs because of such differences.

The government is trying to bridge the gap between poor and rich suburbs in terms of resources. The move should be lauded but it will take time before such a move bears fruits. Financial resources are a concern, but not the only concern. Other factors that determine performance include the quality of teachers, support of surrounding communities and motivation.

Establishing a positive learning culture helps institutions to maintain high performance. Institutions that have a history of a winning culture are better placed to continue with the trend. Affirmative action will take time to raise the motivation of students and assist them to develop a superior culture. Parents, surrounding community and the management must be willing to support improvement efforts.

Student welfare plays a critical role in fixing some of the issues. The safety of teachers and pupils must be guaranteed to ensure that good results are delivered. Other psychological issues that need fixing include race and class. They have been used and are perceived as sources and justifications for the crisis. The expectations must be high for all stake holders in the sector.

Expectations from the education system must be reviewed to eliminate obsession with the score after a test. Inclusion of elements like creativity, collaborative skills and critical thinking should form the new trend. Quick practical solutions need to be abandoned and their place taken by the patience of time and systematic thinking. The solutions that have been provided for the market are quick fixes and very short lived without the backing of tested principles.
